Not a shock, Bill's passing. Alert readers of his columns would have noticed, over the past several years, passing references to health concerns and hospital stays. He had presided over his own orderly withdrawal from Public Life, retiring from the helm of National Review, and bringing Firing Line's 30 year run to a close.
There were some things about the man that irked. The accent, the ostentatious vocabulary, the whif of smugness. Oh, and that weird thing he did with his eyes, when they'd open really wide for a half a beat. In the last 15 years, just about every article Bill wrote about someone turned into an article about himself. That got old too.
But you had to love the way he vexed The Very Smart People of the Left. It absolutely killed them, how someone that smart could disagree with them. And for that we salute you, Bill. RIP.
We were on the road when Bill died and I was unable to access my computer. I did think of the article I would write, mentally coming up with some really big and obscure words. By the time I got to put together a posting, too many days had gone by and I went with a minimal salute.
Thanks Mark for adding a much more appropriate eulogy.
